Research to create a vicious version of the H5N1 virus has been stuck since November 2011. At that time, scientists from the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) has suggested the existence of research to create the virus.
"I think there is nothing more frightening than a virus on this one. I think antrax though not nothing compared to this virus," says Paul Keim of the NSABB when it's in an article in the journal Science, as quoted by Reuters on Wednesday (21 / 12 / 2011).
Now the project created an artificial virus that has been successful, even been tested on ferrets are considered to have a mechanism of transmission of flu viruses most similar to humans. The result, the ferret can be mutually transmit this deadly virus.
The success of this research is expected to change history if it gets off the virus samples, or imitated by irresponsible parties. In addition to triggering a terrible plague, the virus can also used by the terrorists to create biological weapons.
For these reasons, the U.S. government has recently called for details of this study be kept confidential. Appeal is given not only to scientists involved in research, but also some well-known scientific journals.
"The NSABB emphasizes that the details of this study do not fall into the wrong hands," said Dr. Bruce Alberts, editor of the journal Science that receive such appeal in a meeting with several other scientific journals including the journal Nature.
Bird flu or H5N1 virus is known to trigger a very serious impact on 60 percent of cases in humans. But until now the victim died in a whole new world there are 350 cases because the virus is not transmitted from human to another human being without the mediation of poultry.
