Scientists from Athmospheric Pollution Research in Rome found, dozens of places in Italy has not only polluted air fumes of motor vehicles but also by illicit substances. Source pollution is primarily marijuana and cocaine.
Based on statistics compiled by the researchers, the pollution smoke marijuana and powder cocaine is also associated with health status of surrounding communities. Powdered cocaine is associated with cancer risk, while cannabis-related mental health.
The research team led by Angelo Cecinato claimed to be very careful to draw conclusions, given the psychoactive effects of some substances such as marijuana is still debated. Although there was a link, researchers still do not dare to infer a causal relationship.
Even so, other researchers welcomed the findings because it could be a consideration in controlling air pollution. Therefore, support to conduct further studies continue to come from many walks of life.
"The researchers found no link, there is no harm in exploring further. Secondhand smoke also initially not considered dangerous, but now could prove dangerous," said Wilson Compton of the National Institute on Drug Abuse as quoted from Dailymail, Wednesday (21/12/2011 ).
Even if not shown to be associated with health risks in the general population, at least this study prove that the contamination of hazardous substances can be detected in the air. By the police, these findings could be used to detect the vulnerable points of drug abuse.
