Indonesian children are subject to Diabetes Many Not Detected

many who do not know if a child can also get diabetes? But because diabetes is considered an adult disease, parents of children with symptoms of diabetes tend to be ignorant. As a result many children are affected by undetected diabetes and can not live long.

In contrast to adults who are most affected diabtes type 2 due to changes in diet, diabetes is more common in children is type 1 diabtes. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a type 1 diabetes occurs because of damage to pancreatic beta cells. Damage to the pancreas is not able to make the body produce its own insulin.

The most typical symptoms in type 1 DM is the son of a lot of eating (polyphagia), lots of drinking (polydipsia) and a lot of urine (polyuria). But before these symptoms appear, usually the child will experience other symptoms ie fatigue and his weight continued to decline.

Children with type 1 diabetes eat a lot because the body does not produce insulin to signal that the body is not hungry. As a result, the brain always feel the need intake of calories, so the kids always want to eat like never satiated.

Many drink in touch with a lot of urine, because the body fluids lost during urination must be balanced with lots of drinking. Many of his own urine occurs because the body is always trying to remove excess blood sugar through the urine.

"Not having to wait three symptoms, if the child has started to feel weak and his weight is always down then chances are there's something wrong with insulin. Should immediately be checked so that if there is interference with the production of insulin, is not detected too late," said Dr. Erwin in the seminar media entitled "Integrated and Comprehensive Management of Type 1 DM in Indonesia: What Have We Achieved?" at the Hotel Akmani, Wednesday (26/10/2011).

Children with DM 1 have received treatment and regular blood tests for the rest of his life. But not all parents are capable of the children affected by DM1 able gave the medication and regular blood tests. As a result, an estimated 30-40 percent of children with type 1 diabetes in the treatment failed because they have no cost.

"About 30 per cent. Between 30-40 percent fail in treatment due to poverty, poor," said Dr. Erwin is also Project Manager for Group Work Unit (UKK) Endocrinology of Indonesian Pediatric Association.

According to him, a good health insurance is needed to save hundreds of Indonesian children from the disease.

It is said by Dr. Erwin, in some cases, children with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 1 insulin had been given only once and subsequently dies. There are too late because it was detected, but most of them because they do not bear the costs.

As an illustration, in a day a person with type 1 diabetes have to do a blood test about 3 times a day with disposable strips, each of which costs about Rp 10,000. Not to mention the need to buy insulin, which costs Rp 200,000 per flacon for injecting several times.

If calculated on a rough, routine spending an ambulant type 1 diabetes could reach Rp 3.5 million per month because of the added cost of the purchase of syringes, each of which only a single use. Nominal weight of this course for a mediocre income yag.

According to Dr. Erwin, insulin for people with type 1 DM is already borne by the Community Health Insurance (Jamkesmas). However, in practice, Dr. Erwin judge there are still many poor people who struggle to take care of administrative Jamkesmas.

Until now I have no definite figures relating the number of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia. But according to data UKK Endocrinology, until October 2011 the number is estimated to reach 724 children with growth of about 240 new cases / year.

Complication

One of the complications of type 1 DM are often found in children are ketoacidosis, or often called diabetic coma. This condition occurs because the body does not produce insulin to process sugar into energy, so the energy requirement is obtained from fats are converted into ketones.

Excess ketones in the body causing acidosis or increased acidity of the body, so there was a diabetic coma if untreated can lead to death. According to Dr. Erwin, the majority of the 724 children with type 1 diabetes mellitus detected after experiencing this complication.
