News Health Articles - Racism Victims Effects Same as Trauma. Racism is the act of distinguishing the treatment of people because of differences in ethnicity and skin color. The results showed that racism affects the mental health of adult blacks in the United States, as well as trauma.

In the United States that in fact the glorification of individual freedom and equal rights, the issue of racism is still prevalent today.

The study concluded that racism and trauma has the effect of somatization (psychological pressure resulting in pain or physical health problems), it becomes too sensitive, and cause anxiety. The greater the pressure associated with racism, the greater the mental distress experienced.



The study, published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology by examination of 66 previous studies involving more than 18,000 adult blacks.

The results of this study confirmed that the relationship between mental health and racism can lead to physical health gap between black citizens by other citizens of different races and ethnicities.

"The relationship between perceived racism with depression and anxiety is quite strong. This is a reminder that racism may play a role in differences in health conditions between blacks and whites in the United States," said the study's authors, Alex Pieterse of the University at Albany, State University of New York

"For example, African American (black) have high levels of hypertension (high blood pressure) is higher, a serious condition that has long been associated with stress and depression," said Pieterse as reported Health24.com, Tuesday (11/29/2011 ).
