Many diabetes patients who make a big mistake by walking barefoot on hot asphalt with a reason to eliminate the tingling. It can actually make the foot injury and infection and eventually amputated.

Diabetes Patients should be aware of diabetic foot complications. Imagine, for diabetic patients with uncontrolled blood sugar, foot problems can lead to poor healing of wounds, which then will become infected with more serious consequences such as amputation and even death.

"Diabetic foot disorders can occur when blood sugar control is not performed well and lasted continuously for many years. The main factor is the cause nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) and blood vessel disorders," explains Prof. Dr. dr. Sarwono Waspadji, Sp.PD, KEMD of Diabetes & Lipid Center, Division of Endocrine Metabolic Medicine Department, Faculty of medicine, at the Media Education 20th Jakarta Diabetes Meeting at the Hotel Le Meridien, Jakarta, Wednesday (02/11/2011).

Nerve that is damaged make diabetes patients can not feel pain, heat, cold feet, so that the wound in the leg may be worse because patients are not aware of the injury. Diabetic neuropathy occurs in more than 50 percent of diabetes patients. Common symptoms are numbness (numbness) and weakness in the feet and hands.

"Because not feel hot, diabetic patients will calm-calm only if the road in the hot streets. In fact there is a suggested street barefoot on hot asphalt to eliminate the tingling. That's a big mistake," said Prof Sarwono.

According to Prof Sarwono, is a big mistake when diabetes patients walk barefoot on hot asphalt to eliminate numbness in the legs. This rule will create a blistered foot, causing injury, infection and eventually amputated.

"There is also a diabetic patient tingling in the feet kept warm not hot water bottle attached, it also can make a foot blister," continued Prof. Sarwono.

According to data of 2010 which was delivered by Prof. Sarwono, the biggest cause of ulcers (sores on the feet) in diabetic patients is due to the pressure (mechanical), amounting to 49 percent.

"Mechanics is usually because there is a small stone in the shoe is not kerasa (due to diabetes patients foot numbness or numbness). But as it is used all day eventually blisters," explained Prof. Sarwono.

Other causes of chemicals (2 percent), heat (4 percent), spontaneous (14 percent) and others (14 percent).

Chronic diabetic foot complications of diabetes is the most feared because of the risk of amputation is high enough and life threatening. Diabetic foot examination should be thorough, well before the appearance of the wound or injury has occurred now.

It is also highly advisable to check feet regularly every day, to detect if there are injuries or anything suspicious to be able to do the prevention of wound appearance. By doing these efforts then the risk of amputation can be lowered to 85 percent.
