The new drug developed by scientists from Pennsylvania State University is called "delta 12-prosglandin J3" and coded D-12-PGJ3. Raw material is very easy to get, namely omega 3 fatty acid which are found mainly in fish oil.
New drugs are still in the testing phase in this animal works by targeting stem cells from Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia(CML). In this way, D12-PGJ3 will lead CML stem cells to commit suicide until they run out.
Interestingly, trial of some rats showed that after treatment of blood cancer does not appear anymore. It is mean does not have the risk of recurrence. Compared to other cancer drug, new drugs are also claimed to be the most secure because of minimal side effects.
Blood cancer therapies that targets CML cells is not new, since most of the drug for leukemia to work the same way. But the new drugs from fish oil is a bit different, because it attack peak cell so more effective.
Meanwhile, fish oil has been long time known have many health benefits, among others, could protect the heart and brain tissue from damage. Fish oil is also known to contain lots of vitamins, so they can keep the skin youthful.
"But this time, we prove that some metabolites of omega 3 have the ability to kill leukemia cancer stem cells on a selective basis," says Prof. Sandeep Prabhu, who reported these findings in the Blood journal, as quoted from Dailymail, Wednesday (January 4, 2012).
