Description
Tacrine is used to treat symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, but will not cure Alzheimer's disease and will not stop the disease getting worse. However, tacrine can improve thinking ability in some patients with Alzheimer's disease.
In Alzheimer's disease, chemical changes occur in the brain. One of the earliest and biggest changes is that the lack of a chemical called acetylcholine (Ach).
ACh helps the brain work well. Tacrine slows ACh solution. However, when Alzheimer's disease gets worse, ACh will be minor and diminished so that tacrine is no longer able to work well.
Tacrine can cause liver disorders. When taking this drug, patients should perform regular blood tests to see whether the drug affects the liver. These drugs are only available by prescription in capsule form.

To treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in mild to moderate degree.
dose
Adults: Initially, 10 mg four times a day. The doctor may increase your dose gradually if the body responds well and normal liver tests. However, the dose usually is not more than 40 mg four times daily.
