If Rarely Do, Sex & Sports Taxable Heart Risk

News Health Articles - If Rarely Do, Sex & Sports Taxable Heart Risk. Exercising or having sex increases the risk of heart attack three times a few hours afterwards, especially if the activity is rarely done. However, heart patients should not abstain from sexual activity or sport just because of these findings.

Although the three-fold increased risk of heart attack sounds scary, the possibility of having a heart attack after exercising or having sex is still very low at only 3 out of one million opportunities.

"Obviously, we should not interpret the finding that physical activity or sexual activity is the activity that is dangerous. The effect on the individual level is still very small," said the researcher, Issa Dahabreh, MD from Tufts Medical Center's Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies, Boston , Massachusetts as reported by CNN on Tuesday (20 / / 12 / 2011).

Study participants were more physically active seem to be more resistant to heart attacks because of sex or sports.

Numerous studies have shown that physical activity can trigger heart attacks, but the magnitude of risk is unclear. Then re-Dahabreh and colleagues analyzed data from 14 studies since the 1980's.

All research using a design study called the case-crossover, in which the activities of the participants in one to two hours before a heart attack compared to the usual routine.

If physical or sexual activity is more common during the period leading up to a heart attack than at any other time, then the research would suggest that that's what triggered the attack.

A few hours after exercise, increased heart attack risk about 3.5 times. And the risk is increased about 2.7 times within two hours after sex. Physical activity is also five times the risk of causing sudden death from heart attack.

However, research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirms that the risk of heart attack was reduced by 45 percent if the study participants perform additional physical exercise in a week.
