Leaving Work Up Car and Public Transport Not Healthy

Cyclists who like to go to work by bike seems to have many health benefits. More recently, a study confirms that people who go to work by car, train or bus tend to be more at risk of developing health problems than those who go to work by walking or cycling.

Swedish researchers surveyed 21,000 people aged workers 18 to 65 years. Workers who commute by car or public transportation reported more stress, fatigue, loss of working days and general health problems compared to workers who leave work by walking or riding a bike.

"We know that people who have many demands but have little control over the fulfillment of their demands at higher risk of negative health effects. And when he relied on the train to go to work, it is clearly beyond the control of most of his time," said Dr.. Redford Williams, professor of medicine and director of the Center for Behavioral Medicine Research at Duke University.

The study, published October 30 in the journal BMC Public Health does not disclose whether to go to work by car or public transport had been the cause of health problems. But according to researchers, learn how to cope with stress caused by these trips can help limit the negative health effects.

"More research needs to be done to identify how to actually commute to work-related ill-health. The observations we wanted to assess the balance between the needs of the economy, health, and the cost of lost work days," said the study's authors, Erik Hansson of Lund University in Sweden.

Work has also been associated with marital discord. The economy now seems to be causing difficulties for people who like to pick and choose the ideal workplace where she lived.

"Obviously we have to consider all the factors involved. Maybe people who do not have a steady job can take any path. But if you have a choice, you should take a trip with the shortest distance possible," Williams said seeprti ABCNews.com reported on Wednesday (2 / 11/2011).
