Nearly 76,000 people died prematurely (at a young age) due to cancer each year in the UK (more than 40 percent of the total premature deaths), compared with 28,000 who die from heart disease (15 percent) and 17,000 from respiratory disease (9 percent). The rest consists of digestive disorders and other causes, including AIDS.Lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer among all age groups, which causes about 35,000 deaths per year. Followed by colon cancer (about 16,000) and breast cancer (about 11,700).
However, experts in this study said that the death rate from this disease has declined dramatically over the last 40 years.
"We have had great success in reducing death rates from various types of cancer in the last decade. But too many people are still dying from this devastating disease and we certainly have a lot of work to do," explained Professor Peter Johnson, Cancer Research UK's chief clinician, as reported by Dailymail, Monday (11/07/2011).
Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager of Cancer Research UK, said cancer is a disease that kills more people than any other major diseases.
"We must redouble efforts to ensure that our research continues to find new ways to enhance and improve diagnosis and treatment," said Dr Julie Sharp.
