Fragrances Products Can Cause Cancer?

News Health Articles - Fragrances Products Can Cause Cancer?. Various ingredients of household products such as air fresheners, scented soap, hand sanitizers, detergents, and cleaning materials emit a fragrant aroma or fragrance. Unfortunately, some fragrance materials are in fact classified as toxic or hazardous materials and some materials restricted its use to be considered safe.

"This product can cause various adverse health effects such as headaches, difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, rashes, and even loss of consciousness. I want to know what ingredients can cause this effect," said Dr.. Anne Steinemann of the University of Washington.

To produce a fragrant odor, these products are added chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or volatile organic ingredients. Together with his colleagues, Dr. Steinemann analyzed 25 scented products such as air fresheners, scented laundry, cleaning, and personal care products. They found that 25 products are all emit a total of 133 chemicals (VOCs) which differ by an average of 17 VOCs for each product.

Of the 133 chemicals, 24 of whom are classified as toxic or hazardous under U.S. federal law, and every product issued one to eight of these compounds.

Approximately half of the studied products claim to be the product of "green" with frills "organic", "natural", or "essential oils" but actually it is also a toxic and dangerous compounds that are widely used products in general.

"We also found some other surprising results. Almost half of scented products emit one or more carcinogenic hazardous air pollutants," added Dr. Steinemann as reported by TheStar.com, Friday (12/30/2011).

Carcinogens or cancer triggers in question is 1,4-dioxane, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and methylene chloride that have no safe exposure level according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency or the Environmental Protection Agency.

Even if products do not contain harmful chemicals, materials in the product can produce it. For example, the most common chemicals produced is limonene which reacts with ozone in the air around it and create a potentially dangerous pollutants such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and ultrafine particles5.

Therefore, Dr. Steinemann call for consumers to switch to products with basic ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, and use unscented products. To improve indoor air quality, would be better if you open the windows or turning on the fan instead of using air fresheners or deodorizers that are not clean the air, but only cover up problems and worsen air quality.

A toxicology, Dr. Tod Bania, said that he never got a patient who reported symptoms of scented products. But he said that no need to panic because of carcinogens in fragrances products are relatively low. However, exposure to these products for long term can be dangerous, especially if you have lung disease and asthma.

The relationship between the products are fragrance with cancer risk has often been studied and shown to both of them are related. As reported previously detikHealth, 20 percent of women who regularly wear air freshener breast cancer tend to be more susceptible.
