Only 25-50 percent of hyperthyroid patients who can be cured with medicine, the rest should go back and forth to the doctor to continue treatment.

"Only 25-50 percent of hyperthyroid patients are truly cured perfectly with drugs," said Prof. Dr. Johan S Masjhur, SpPD-KEMD, SpKN in media seminar Beware of Health Problems Due to Abnormalities in the thyroid gland, at the Sahid Jaya Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday (13/12/2011).

Prof. Johar said it was common or is not surprising that there are people with thyroid disorders should be back and forth to the doctor, depending on how long he can last with the drug.

Prof. Johar further explained that there were few alternative treatments that can be done to cope with hyperthyroidism are:

Using anti-thyroid drugs
Using radioactive iodine
Through surgery or surgery to lift the thyroid gland
Targeted Therapy, uses a substance to inhibit the function of the hormone but is currently still in development stage.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland works too active to produce excess thyroid hormone that makes the body's metabolism is faster and can make the quality of life of sufferers decline.

People with hyperthyroidism have symptoms like these:
1. A very rapid heart rate or more than 100 per minute
2. Having excessive sweat than usual
3. Shaking hands and hair loss
4. Increased frequency of bowel movements
5. Nail growth is very fast
6. Can not stand the heat
7. Thin and delicate skin
8. Weight loss meskinpun normal diet or a lot
9. Anxiety and irritability
10. Menstrual disruption.

Thyroid hormone is one of the hormones of life, so that the necessary treatment usually takes a long time. Patients with hyperthyroidism who took the drug may experience remission (recovered temporarily) so that he could stop taking the drug.

But if there is one thing that can be a trigger or originators the hyperthyroid state may recur again and usually it should take the drug again.

"In the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism is known to the amount of thyroid hormones T3 and T4 is high but the levels of the hormone TSH (Thyroid-stimulating hormone) is low," said Prof. Dr. Dr. Sri Hartini Kariadi KS, SpPD-KEMD.
