Recent research from the University of California, Berkeley found someone only takes 20 seconds to trust strangers. Researchers recruited 24 pairs and ask each person to talk about sad moments ever experienced.
Meanwhile, the cameras record the reaction partner. A separate group who saw the videotape is able to recognize pretense compassion on one pair in just 20 seconds.
Researchers then took DNA samples of study participants and found that as many as 60 percent of participants who considered insincere does not have the GG genotype of the receptor gene that functions controlling compassion and empathy.
"The receptor helps regulate the body's levels of oxytocin. Oxytocin has been studied related to trust, empathy, and generosity," said the researcher, Alexsandr Kogan, post-doctoral student at the University of Toronto.
In the study participants who rated the most trustworthy, 90 percent of them carry genes GG genotype. But because the gene is only associated with the perception of sincerity, it does not mean a person was not sympathetic if it does not have this gene.
Observer can tell which are genuine individuals because there are certain behaviors that are found associated with the signal of confidence and attitude to give support.
"When you're dealing with a salesman, a new partner, or spouse blind date, people can identify fraudulent behavior if they knew what to look for," said Marc Salem, a psychologist as reported by FoxNews.com, Wednesday (07/12/2011).
Signs that can be searched from a liar, among others:
1. Behavior that is inconsistent
"If a person is usually very quiet but has suddenly become very excited or vice versa, the change is an obvious sign. Changes in habits is a clear sign of deception," said Salem.
The same applies if a person speak fluently and quickly, but suddenly spoke more cautiously or truncated.
2. The look of calm
"When people think or reflect, reasonably if he broke eye contact and look around," said Salem. If a person's view is too constant, both while listening or not consciously trying to gain the trust, it is a sign of insincerity.
3. Not enough just to mouth
"Cough, frequent throat clearing, or other cue to shut the mouth can indicate that someone is trying to hide something," said Salem. The same applies if the shoulders down or bending the body pose.
It is a sign of caution and shows a person does not open up completely.
4. Smile that quickly
"A smile is sincere change throughout a person's face. Her eyes sparkled and her cheeks and eyebrows raised along with the lifting of the corners of the mouth," said Salem. A sincere smile also takes a few seconds to fade. Fake smile appeared in a flash and disappeared quickly.
