Drugs more effective than Circumcision Preventing HIV Transmission

News Health Articles - Drugs more effective than Circumcision Preventing HIV Transmission. Circumcision touted helped reduce the risk of transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) through sexual intercourse. But circumcision was not enough, because the effectiveness of prevention is still lower than taking anti-retroviral (ARV) regularly.

The results of the study on a variety of worldwide research, published recently showed that circumcision lowers the risk of HIV transmission is only an average of 54 percent. In some countries only 38 percent effectiveness, while elsewhere there are about 66 percent.

This figure is lower than the protective efficacy of ARV drugs are taken regularly, which reached an average of 96 percent. 73 percent while the lowest number of research results in some countries there are up to 99 percent if treatment is started as early as possible.

"Currently the best treatment is prevention," said Prof. Dr. Zubairi Djoerban, SpPD-KHOM, HIV experts from Kramat 128 Hospital at a press conference of the American Association in Indonesia (PAPDI) at Munik Matraman Restaurant, Thursday (01/12/2011).

Although effectiveness is not higher than the ARV drugs, circumcision is recommended as one strategy for HIV prevention because it is more effective than other strategies. HIV vaccines for example, if the later is found, it is estimated will only reduce the risk of HIV transmission by 31 percent on average.

Especially for the routes of transmission through sexual intercourse, condoms are still considered the best protection to the records is always used properly and not leaking. Despite circumcision and taking medication, the use of condoms is recommended to enhance protection against HIV.

While in pregnant women, ARV treatment is also effective in preventing transmission to the baby. For those who just found out when they want to give birth and did not get to consume drugs, the only prevention is to have the baby by Caesarean section.
