Children Ages 9-11 Years Better Cholesterol Test

News Health Articles - Children Ages 9-11 Years Better Cholesterol Test. Children should be examined cholesterol levels when aged 9-11 years. This recommendation comes from a panel of 14 experts and organized by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics in the United States.

Recommendations published in the journal Pediatrics in 1992 it changed its guidelines that recommend that children should be examined cholesterol only if there is a history of high cholesterol or heart disease in his family.

"But the panel decided to encourage the expansion because research evidence has accumulated showing that high cholesterol in children can lead to early signs of heart disease, whereas a targeted approach does not work well. Meanwhile, some children with high cholesterol can benefit from good diet and exercise, "said Stephen R. Daniels of the University of Colorado, leader of the panel as reported by the Washington Post, Monday (12/12/2011).

This test can be done with a simple and inexpensive because it only requires a small amount of blood. However, this new recommendation immediately criticized by some parties.

Nortin M. Hadler, professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said that he strongly objected to these new recommendations. According to him, high cholesterol levels do not always lead to heart disease.
