A study has involved 2855 students in three schools in 28 school English found students with chronic fatigue syndrome. The results of these studies have been published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).
One of 100 high school students can not attend school because of chronic fatigue syndrome (chronic fatigue syndrome). Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).
"The effects of these potentially devastating syndrome. The number of such patients may actually be higher than the data already known," the researchers said.
The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome to date unknown and there is no specific medication to deal with the syndrome. Syndrome is a medical condition that occurs not only in school children who often stay up too late.
The researchers observed each student between the ages of 11-16 years in three secondary schools in Bath. Some 461 students were absent for at least one day a week within a period of 6 weeks has been observed further. Five students have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue and 23 cases still further identified.
Overall 1 percent of students had experienced chronic fatigue syndrome and the syndrome has accounted for more than 6 percent of students who do not fit in a large number of schools.
Symptoms of the syndrome, among others:
1. Extreme fatigue
2. Problems with memory and concentration
3. Sleep disturbances and mood
"The impact of the syndrome led to students not attending school is very detrimental. The number of students who do not attend school because of the syndrome were expected to continue rising," said Dr.. Esther Crawley, researchers from the University of Bristol as reported from BBCNewsHealth, Wednesday (14/12/2011).
Of all students who are diagnosed with the syndrome, 19 students chose to get treatment. The students were given cognitive behavior therapy.
Cognitive behavioral therapy aims to, among other things:
1. Changing the way people think and cope with symptoms of the syndrome
2. Therapy with sports or physical exercise
3. Gradual progression of the syndrome healing supervised in activity levels.
Twelve of the students who followed the treatment of returning to school after 6 months. Six of these students have experienced a full recovery. While the other students who did not follow the treatment of back to school, but not with full-time.
"Chronic fatigue syndrome is not uncommon as a cause of students absent from school. Therefore it is necessary for screening for the syndrome. This study shows that about two-thirds was recovered after six months of cognitive behavioral therapy. The results of this study is also important to know your doctors and health practitioners, "said Prof. Matthew Hotopf, Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London.
Diseases ME or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) affects almost all parts of the nervous and immune systems. The most common symptoms are fatigue and severe fatigue, memory problems, concentration and muscle fatigue. Consequently one can not do anything with this condition.
The exact cause of the disease is as yet unknown, but some viral infections such as fever associated with glands as well as the trauma can trigger this disease. There is no drug that is really effective against this disease.
