"Many women who get sores or blisters after sexual intercourse and most of the cuts and abrasions are normal. Abrasions vagina may be more pronounced during sex, because semen can sting when in contact with open wounds," said Dr. Edwin Huang, MD, a gynecologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, as reported by everydayhealth, Monday (11/28/2011).

What causes vaginal sores?

When aroused, her vagina will naturally produce a fluid that lubricates the area during sexual activity, so as to reduce friction that can disrupt or tear the skin of the vagina. If the vagina is not lubricated enough, vaginal dryness can lead to sores and abrasions in the vagina.

Dr Huang said that vaginal dryness is a common cause of vaginal injuries. Another factor contributing to vaginal dryness include:

1. Menopause

Because sex hormone estrogen begins to decline so that the vaginal fluid was reduced.

2. Not enough foreplay

Sexual arousal causes secretion of vaginal fluid and inadequate foreplay before intercourse can cause vaginal dryness.

3. History of sexual abuse

Dr Huang said that the victims of abuse may be difficult to relax during sex or may not be comfortable with foreplay, making it difficult for them to become aroused.

4. Other causes

How to prevent injuries during vaginal sex

Because of frequent cause of vaginal dryness, improving lubrication in the vagina during sexual activity is often the best way to prevent vaginal wound. The way to do this include:

1. Lubrication or artificial lubricants

Water-based lubrication can help overcome vaginal dryness. Always made from water, because oil-based lubricants can cause condom breakage that puts a high risk for sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.

In addition, many women are allergic to the oil-based lubricants and can actually cause irritation to the skin.

2. Longer foreplay

Dr. Huang suggested more foreplay and stimulation of the vagina before sexual intercourse is a good way of avoiding injury to the vagina. Increased vaginal foreplay to give time (and motivation) are naturally lubricate itself.

3. Adjust the position of

For heterosexual couples sexual positions, some positions better than others. "With the woman on top (women on top), less risk for injury vagina because women have more control," said Dr. Huang.
