Over the years David Prescott dealing with pedophiles to try to evaluate whether this condition can be treated with medication or not. Prescott himself was a therapist in Minnesota.
"So far, studies have shown that treatment such as therapy can work very well, the therapy will help the pedophile to resist the urgent desire," said Prescott, as quoted by LiveScience, Thursday (22/12/2011).
Prescott said that in the early 1980s, the therapy focused on sexual attraction was a pedophile in confrontal. But studies show that the use of empathy was far more effective. This is because some pedophiles may be able to change their sexual attraction to healthy adult relationships.
"There is a general perception that sex offenders are sex offenders all the time. That's not necessarily true, because in certain circumstances they could have normal relations," said Robin Wilson, a psychiatrist from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
A study published in the American Journal of Forensic Psychiatry, involved 406 people convicted of sexual crimes against children in Maryland.
The study found men who successfully completed therapy can return to normal life. While men who do not get therapy, there is a risk of 7.4 percent back into a pedophile after receiving punishment.
Pedophilia itself is divided into 'hebephilic' who is sexually attracted to pubescent children as well as 'pedohebephilic' who is sexually attracted to pre-teen children and a second puberty.
While the method can be used to pedophilia diagnose is phallometri method (see the changes phallus or penis while viewing photos of nude children), as well as the methods of functional brain scans with magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
