A study conducted at the German Cancer Research Center in Germany showed that the growth of cancer cells tend to be inhibited when it reacts with sildenafil citrate. This compound is the active ingredient contained in a powerful drug Viagra.
When in the body, a compound sildenafil citrate arouse the immune system to fight cancer. As a result, inhibited cancer cell growth, whereas if you have not already had cancer then the risk for contracting cancer would be reduced.
In a study led by Viktor Umansky, the scientists used mice that have been genetically modified so that it has a higher risk of developing melanoma. Melanoma is one of the most deadly skin cancer.
Although only using mice, the results of this study provide sufficient confirmation of the results of previous studies. In 2006 for example, researchers from Johns Hopkins University also revealed that Viagra can inhibit cancer cell growth.
"Cancer cells normally inhibit T cells (immune components to fight cancer), but Viagra can reactivate the T cells," Umansky said in a report in the journal Proceedings as quoted from FOXNews, Tuesday (11/29/2011).
Unfortunately, to be applied as a cancer therapy, Viagra still must undergo a very lengthy process. Umansky estimates it will take many more years of research to prove that strong medicine is safe and truly effective in treating cancer.
