It's not all coffee lovers using drugs. But if you already know, people who like to drink coffee more easily addicted to drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines.
It is based on the study of Vermont University researchers in the United States that has been published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
According to researchers, people who respond positively to caffeine, including coffee and energy drinks, will be easier to respond to other stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine. This is the reason why coffee lovers more easily become addicted to drugs.
"People respond to drugs with very different ways. For example, a single dose of drugs can result in a completely opposite effect on one of two people who really love coffee and other hate coffee," explains Professor Stacey Sigmon of Vermont University, USA, Dailymail as reported on Wednesday (12/10/2011).
Professor Sigmon said it was important to increase understanding of this difference, because this could be the key differences in susceptibility or resistance in drug abuse.
The scientists believe that one's response to d-amphetamine also show how they will react to drugs like cocaine because it has the same effect.
This study is the first prospective study of caffeine in predicting the positive subjective effects of other drugs.
"Although this data does not mean that all coffee lovers at risk to become addicted to cocaine, but this study suggests that individuals vary greatly in their subjective and behavioral responses to psychomotor stimulants," concludes Professor Sigmon.
