Phenytoin, anticonvulsants Drugs to Overcome Epilepsy

Phenytoin is used to control seizures (convulsions) are commonly used in the treatment of epilepsy. The drug is also used to prevent and treat seizures that occur during brain surgery.

This is an anticonvulsant drug that works in the brain tissue to stop the seizures. These drugs are only available by prescription.

indication

To control seizures, such as the condition of epilepsy or seizure conditions that occur during brain surgery procedure.

contraindications
The drug is contraindicated in pregnant women

dose

1. epilepsy
Initial: 3-4 mg / kg / day as single dose or in divided doses.
Maintenance: 200-500 mg / day.

2. status epilepticus
In addition to benzodiazepines: 10-15 mg / kg.
Maintenance: 100 mg 6-8 hours.

side effects

Along with the required effect, the drug may cause some unwanted effects. If one of the side effects occurred, would probably require medical treatment.

See a doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:
1. decreased coordination
2. Disruption of mental conditions, such as confusion
3. nervous
4. slurred speech
5. Problems with breathing, talking, or swallowing
6. Trembling, or other problems with muscle control or coordination
